Work from home reviews - Life inside the IT sector || Life of corporate professional || Work from home

I am an IT sector professional with more than 5 years of experience in my current domain. As a software engineer, I had worked for various clients where I gained a lot of knowledge and experience. If you need an honest review of life inside an IT sector especially work from home trend, then you are at the right place. Here I will discuss both pros and cons of working from home inside an IT company.

Employee Friendly or not?

One side of the story says that working from home is the new trend and companies will opt it in their long term process as it is becoming the new trend where an employee wants to work from home rather than in office and is very comfortable for both employee as well as his/her employer.

On the contrary, there are a few who also suggests that work from home should be revoked as companies are taking lot of advantage from it while putting pressure on employees. Many of my friends used to tell me that his/her company is not very friendly in work from home policy. Managers put a lot of pressure and there is no official work timings now. Whenever manager wants, calls the employee and asks him/her to complete the work or come online or attend a meeting. As employer is at his/her home all the time so there is no excuse of not working at flexible timings. Even late night calls have become part of manager's curriculum even if it is against company's policies. Normally work timings are 9am - 5pm but manager's now can even call you after or before that timings no matter what. They are even putting more pressure filling in more work in order to show their capability / managerial skills to the company. Doing this even if more amount of work is completed but employee gets exhausted and tries to switch to a new company. There is no work life balance if such managers comes to picture.

For instance, one of friend was working for a big 4 company in India (I would not use the name of the company). She joined the company and everything was running smoothly, Covid came in and everyone started working from home. She told me that she was so much pressurised sometimes that she has to work for at-least 15-17 hours a day. She was about to leave her job even without any other offer in hand. If such MNC's don't maintain work life balance, then what can be expected from start ups.

Negative points

Here is a list of negative points which employees face during work from home:

  • Work life balance (depending on company)
  • Reduced friend circle
  • Lost of touch with team mates
  • No flexible timings (depends on company)
  • More pressure (depends on company and project)

Positive points

Coming on to positive points, work from home gives numerous benefits to both employees and its employer. Here are a few perks which an employee enjoys:

  • Great work life balance if maintained (depends on company)
  • Timing for personal and professional life
  • No traffic jams or travel time
  • You can enjoy in whatever city you like to work in such as a hill station or a beach
  • Flexible timings (depends on company)
  • No rental flats in costly cities such as Bangalore in India
  • No extra expenses such as electricity, maid, cook and lot more expenses
  • Improved performance

Rumours

There are a lot of rumours saying that companies are not paying properly or people are getting under paid. Some companies are not giving full salary to their employees. To clarify this, these all are mere rumours and nothing is true. All the employees are fully paid and even companies are getting more benefits than ever. Even there is shortage of talent as more and more IT companies are growing and more work is coming as people are trying to set up their online business as well. Employees are getting more hikes than ever and to retain them , huge amount of bonus are also provided to them. To hire new employees, companies like Capgemini are offering more than 100% hikes.

Advantages to employer

Companies are getting significant amount of advantages such as:

  • No heavy payments for infrastructure set up
  • Less work force is required because of reduced infrastructure
  • Reduced electricity cost
  • Environmental friendly initiative
  • Reduced cost on small things such as tea, coffee and other things

Overall views

Frankly saying, I am working from home from quiet a long time and till now I am not seeing any negative points from my Company. Moreover, huge benefits such as bonus and handsome hikes are also provided to me. Most of the MNC's are having good work life balance even with work from home so I would like to conclude that work from home is very awesome policy implemented by IT sector and should be continued as their long term policies.
